Description
The expansion in the global trade in agricultural products, historically the most important exports for poorer developing countries, has lagged far behind that of manufactured goods. This is largely due to the subsidies within the agricultural sector in industrialised countries, which at approximately one billion dollars per day is more than six times the total amount of development assistance. This publication contains a number of papers which discuss key aspects of efforts to foster a trading system which promotes development, including: the benefits of trade liberalisation for developing countries; lessons from the Uruguay Round of WTO negotiations; and the relationship between trade liberalisation and rural poverty.
