Evaluation of root resorption after the multiloop edgewise archwire (MEAW) appliance in patients with anterior open bites.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate apical root resorption of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth in a sample of anterior open bite orthodontic patients treated with the multiloop edgewise archwire (MEAW). Differences in tooth length measurements of radiographs made before and after treatment of 645 anterior teeth were measured. Statistical results indicate more root resorption occurred in the mandible than in the maxilla. Increased active treatment time increased root resorption. Less root resorption was measured from teeth with prior root resorption, retreatment, and roots with incomplete or blunted apices. No significant differences were calculated between root resorption and gender, extraction pattern, habits, age at start, vertical and horizontal tooth movement, overbite, or overjet. On average, teeth treated with the MEAW resorbed less than results from other studies.
