Health outcomes of mothers caring for ventilator-assisted children at home: The influence of social support, coping, and community resources.

Description

The diligent monitoring and complexity of care of a ventilator-assisted child cared for in the home can place a physical and emotional strain on the primary caregiver, in most cases, the mother. The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine the health outcomes and explore the relationships among sources of stress (functional status of child, impact on family), mediators of stress (social support, coping, and community resources) and manifestations of stress (perceived general health, depression, and wellness behaviors) in a group of mothers caring for ventilator-assisted children in the home.
